Join us for Cabin Fever 2023. For full information on each class, see descriptions below.

Each class has a class fee and a materials fee which cover the instructor's costs. An administrative fee which covers GVL expenses and program implementation goes to IGMA. These expenses will be included in your registration fee.

IGMA handles the registration only. You may be contacted by your instructor with the list of class materials or pre-class information.

**Cancellations before February 1 will receive a refund minus a $25 cancellation fee. No refunds will be issued after this date as instructors will have begun shipping materials. If you are registered for a class and can not make it to the class on the event dates you will still have access to the class recordings.

INSTRUCTOR: Lynette Barker, Artisan
PROJECT: Sculpting a Bowl/Vase 101 on a Mini Wheel, No Kiln Needed

LENGTH OF CLASS: 3 hours

DATE AND TIME:
March 19 - 2pm to 5pm EST

Lynette will teach you the basic skills needed to sculpt clay on a mini wheel. For this class, she will use air-dry clay. No kiln is needed. She uses a mini wheel, but a full-sized potter's wheel can also be used.

The project for this class will be a large (relatively speaking) mixing/serving bowl. Simple, smooth and tiny. The scale will be 1:12, so the finished item will be about 1 inch tall. Variation of style is encouraged. Lynette will implement a sculpting method that does not use very much water, unlike standard throwing. This allows for more precise lines and thin edges on your finished projects. Using less water also speeds drying time and allows for possible painting and sealing of the project within the class time. It is expected that students will complete the project of one or more bowls during the class time of 3 hours.

There will be enough clay for at least one bowl, and perhaps more. Lynette sculpts teapots (that really pour tea!) pitchers with delicate spouts and curlicue handles, many elegant shapes of vases, platters and bowls, and unique sculptures. Later classes will cover more complex subjects, finishes and styles. Materials package will include tools needed and a small amount of air-dry clay to complete current project. A link will be included for purchase of more air-dry clay.

SKILL LEVEL: All skill levels welcome

CLASS FEE: $60

GUILD ADMINISTRATIVE FEE: $12 members / $22 non-members

MATERIALS FEE: $20

Optional MATERIALS FEE: $35 for a mini pottery wheel purchased by instructor and shipped to student. To be arranged with Lynette.

Materials fee includes shipping within the United States. International students will be charged according to the amount necessary to ship items to their country and will be charged separately. International students should make arrangements with the instructor as soon as possible after registration.

INSTRUCTOR: Hillary Lee, Artisan
PROJECT: Wind Chimes

LENGTH OF CLASS: This is a virtual class - the estimated time for completion is 3 hours, but it is better if more time is allowed after painting and gluing steps.

DATE AND TIME: Access at your convenience. You will be contacted by your instructor regarding the recording link and materials.

Make a joyful sound! That's just what these lovely miniature wind chimes do. You get to create your unique wind chimes from a mélange of materials including silver, aluminum, steel, brass, wood, turquoise, and shell. Finish the edges of the pre-cut tube lengths and pre-drilled holes, then string the tubes through a precisely drilled disc form. Position findings (your choice of silver or turquoise) along the center chain for the clapper, and affix a wind-catcher at the end (your choice of silver or shell). Top the unit with a disc of decorated wood (your design) encircled with a silver annulus. You can even decorate it with "precious gems" (dabs of acrylic paint). Finished, your wind chimes unit measures approximately 1/2" wide X 2" long.

SKILL LEVEL: Beginner

MATERIALS FEE: $32

Materials fee includes shipping within the United States. International students will be charged according to the amount necessary to ship items to their country and will be charged separately. INSTRUCTOR: Anne Ogg, Artisan
PROJECT: Woodturning tools: Let’s Make One!

LENGTH OF CLASS: 2 hours

DATE AND TIME:
March 25 - 3pm to 5pm EST

Tool making allows woodturners of miniatures to create the high quality tools they need at a fraction of the cost of ready-made tools in kits. This demonstration will show how to create your own tools.

Following construction of the tool, the demonstrator will show, on a full sized lathe, how it is used to finish the inside of a miniature bowl.

Participants will learn about commonly used woodturning tools, how they cut into wood, how the bevel angle affects the cut, and how to use the tool for a smooth, final cut. Then the participants will learn how to take high speed steel, grind the metal to the desired shape, create a handle, and then see how the newly created tool works!

Anne Ogg is an Artisan, creating replica 18th and 19th century wooden kitchen objects in 1/12 scale. Her interest in making tools came about when she could not find a small scale tool, the negative rake scraper, in a size small enough to use in miniature woodturning.

SKILL LEVEL: All skill levels welcome - this is a demonstration class

CLASS FEE: $25

GUILD ADMINISTRATIVE FEE: $5 members / $15 non-members

OPTIONAL MATERIALS FEE: HSS blank $5, handle blank $10

* Students may purchase a High Speed Steel blank and tool handle from the instructor if they wish to try and create their own tool after this class. (Students will also need to have access to a slow speed grinder, drill and 5/32 drill bit to complete their tool making)

Materials fee includes shipping within the United States. International students will be charged according to the amount necessary to ship items to their country and will be charged separately. International students should make arrangements with the instructor as soon as possible after registration.
