Barker

Sculpting a Vase on A Mini Wheel 101
Instructor: Lynette Barker (A)

Wednesday, September 18, 8:00am – 12:00pm

Lynette will teach you the basic skills needed to sculpt clay on a mini wheel. For this class, she will use air-dry clay, so no kiln is needed. She uses a mini wheel. The project for this class will be a large (relatively speaking) vase or bowl. Simple, elegant, and 1:12 scale. Finished projects will be about 1 inch tall. No tiny pieces are involved. Variation of style is encouraged.

Lynette will implement a sculpting method that does not use very much water, unlike standard “throwing.” This allows for very precise lines and thin edges on your finished projects. Techniques learned: centering, opening, shaping by sculpting, and finishing a piece on a mini wheel. Lynette’s unique sculpting style will be used throughout the class.

Using less water also speeds drying time and allows for possible painting and sealing of the project within the class time. It is expected that students will complete the project within the class time of 4 hours. Each will have enough clay for at least two vases/bowls.

Tools to bring: Materials supplied during class by the instructor will include a mini wheel for each student, tools needed and a small amount of air-dry clay to complete current projects.

Wheels and tools are for use during class only, they are not included in the class fee. Wheels and sets of tools are available for purchase after classes are completed for an additional charge. Wheel - $35, set of sculpting tools - $20.

Fowler

Dollhouse Wiring and Finishing 101
Instructor: John Fowler

Offered Thursday, September 19, 8:00am - 12:00pm
or Thursday, September 19, 1:00 – 5:00pm

Do you want to learn how to wire and finish your dollhouse? Then this workshop is for you.

This course teaches you what you need to know:

  • Types of electrical components used in dollhouses. The different type of light bulbs, plugs and connectors, power supplies and wiring systems. Difference between tape and dual wire techniques.
  • Basic connections - how to wire your dollhouse without having to cut or join a single wire, and also explain why that is not the prettiest way to do it, but can be done.
  • Plugs and splices - We will cover the thing you need to know to completely wire a dollhouse installing a basic plug, splicing to make them longer, grouping electrical items together in to a single wire, wiring with canopies that make lights removable or direct wiring if you prefer.
  • Planning how to run wires - We will look at how we plan to wire or re-wire a dollhouse, taking into account that you plan for when the wiring fails, and at some point it will fail because dollhouses are heirlooms and we build ours to be working for multiple generations.

We look at how the wires are best hidden, and how we can plan grouping electrical items to make installation and trouble shooting in the future easier.

We will also delve into general building techniques, wallpapering, flooring, ceiling decoration as most of these skills go hand in hand with wiring your dollhouse.

Tools to bring: I will have enough tools for the class but if you wish to bring your own, I will be happy to help you adjust them. Throughout the class I will explain which tools I find useful and explain the different levels of complexity and quality of the tool we can use.

Sussman

Casting Baked Goods and More! In 1:144
Instructor: Fran Sussman (A)

Wednesday, September 18, 6:00 – 9:00pm

In this evening class, students will learn the techniques and materials needed to capture fine details when casting and produce realistic results. Using a silicone rubber mold provided by the instructor, students will cast a variety of miniature breads and tarts suitable for 1/144. Although these items are tiny, they are actually pretty easy to cast, since there are no undercuts or pockets that you need to be sure to fill. And they’re fun to decorate. So this is a great introduction to casting for 1/144 miniatures!

While the resin cures, students will work on other baked items. As time permits, students will also cast small flower pots and picture frames from the Instructor’s molds. Students will take home a variety of completed baked goods. They will also keep the mold they used in class, additional resin, and other supplies so they can continue casting at home. Students will be given a supply list for materials used in class.

Tools to bring: Students should bring good magnification, a light (with an extension cord if necessary), fine tweezers, a craft knife with a triangle blade and a second knife with a chisel blade if they have one, a small cutting mat, a small paintbrush (smaller than 0), and an inexpensive pair of school scissors. A small jewelry box (at least 1 ¼” x 1 ¾”) to take your mold home would also be helpful

1:144 Patio with Potting Bench
Instructor: Fran Sussman (A)

Thursday, September 19, 9:00am – 5:00pm

This class is a great introduction to 1/144 for the beginner, but the experienced student should have fun and learn a tip or two as well. In this relaxed class, students will start with a pre-formed base and learn how to make a realistic-looking patio using watercolor paper and paints. Next we will create an aged brick wall using cardstock and high quality photo-realistic printed brick. Students will age and weather the supplied 3-D printed potting table and pots, and put finishing touches on the prepared tree and garden implements. (Note that the pots may differ from those in the prototype due to availability.) The remainder of the time will be spent making a variety of realistic and recognizable potted plants that can be arranged around the patio. Students will create plants from punched paper, etched brass, live plant material, and various landscaping foams and dirt. Ink and colored pencils will be used to add color to flowers, as needed. Students will go home with extra materials so they can use the techniques taught in class to make additional potted plants or 1/144 landscaping. Approximate finished size is 1" wide x 1" deep.

Tools to bring: Good magnification and lighting appropriate to the scale are essential. Students should bring an extension cord if your lamp is not battery operated. The instructor will have supplies that you can borrow/share, but it would be helpful if you could bring a craft knife with five sharp #11 blades, a cutting mat, fine tweezers, a sharp pencil or mechanical pencil with an eraser, and several small brushes (at least one #0 and a fine detail brush, such as #10/0). All other materials and tools will be provided.

1:144 Vintage Diner Vignette
Instructor: Fran Sussman (A)

Friday, September 20, 9:00am – 5:00pm

The prototypical US diner from the early and mid-1900s, with its traditional steel exterior and slightly garish interior of black and white tiles, stainless steel, and bold splashes of red or green, are iconic. In this class you will focus on building and fully furnishing an interior vignette in classic diner style. Students will start with a mostly assembled vignette structure. Then students will lay individual black and white floor tiles, put in wall paper, and scratch-build a counter and stools, a table and chairs, and other furnishings. You will have ready-to-use bottles, plates, breads, and baked goods you can add to the shelves or counter.

Under the instructor's guidance, students will work with a variety of materials, including hardwood, styrene, soft metal castings, Yupo paper, and wallpaper. You may find a new glue or other idea to add to your mini supply arsenal. Good fine motor skills and patience are helpful, although alternatives to the more difficult steps will be offered. You’ll be surprised at what you can do! Approximate finished size is 1" wide, deep, and tall.

Tools to bring: Good magnification and lighting appropriate to the scale are essential. Students should bring an extension cord if your lamp is not battery operated. The instructor will have supplies that you can borrow/share, but it would be helpful if you could bring a craft knife with a fresh sharp #11 blade, cutting mat, fine tweezers and a pair that is not so fine, a small assembly jig (at least 2” in one dimension), several small brushes (at least one #0 and a fine detail brush, such as #10/0).
