HISTORIC HOUSES OF NEW YORK CITY
Sotheby’s Auction House & the Merchant’s House Museum

Thursday, February 19, 10:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

$75 IGMA Members / $85 Nonmembers

IGMA is pleased to offer a glimpse into two historic houses in New York City - the world renowned Sotheby’s Auction House, established in England in 1778 and in New York City in 1955, and the Merchant’s House, home to one of new York City’s most prosperous families in the early 19th century.

As pioneers of the ever expanding international art market, Sotheby's opened the doors of its New York offices in 1955, and in 1967 acquired Parke-Bernet, the United States' largest fine art auction house. More than 50 years after opening, Sotheby's New York continues to thrive as the company's worldwide headquarters. Its history of success includes numerous high-profile sales such as the collections of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and Katharine Hepburn.

Bonnie Brennan, Senior Vice President - Trusts, Estates & Appraisals, will lead our group through a one hour tour of the Sotheby headquarters on the upper east side. Tour participants will have the opportunity to learn how the auction process works, how items are consigned, how estimates are reached and catalogues are created. Although there will not be an ongoing auction during our visit, we will have the opportunity to view upcoming auction items – fine art, furniture and decorative arts - in the viewing gallery.

Following our Sotheby’s tour, our group will be transported to the Merchant's House Museum in historic NoHo. Built in 1832 just steps from Washington Square, this elegant red brick and white marble row house on East Fourth Street was home to a prosperous merchant family for almost 100 years and is New York City's only family home preserved intact, both inside and out, from the 19th century. It is considered to be one of the finest examples of the architecture of the late Federal and Greek Revival period.

Complete with the family's original furnishings and personal possessions, the house offers a rare and intimate glimpse of domestic life during the pivotal era of the 19th century when New York City was transformed from a colonial seaport into a thriving metropolis and the center of U.S. commerce.

We will begin our tour with a sit-down formal High Tea, featuring assorted tea sandwiches, scones & cream, sweets and, of course, tea. Following our light lunch, we will gather for a brief historical introduction to the house to be followed by an open house tour where tour patrons may wander throughout the three-story house. Docents will be available in each room .

Please note that the house is on three levels and the use of stairs is necessary.

The bus will leave the front door of the Teaneck Marriott at 10:30 a.m. sharp and return to the hotel at approximately 4:30 p.m. You are welcome to stay afterward in the city should you wish.

Based on the enormously popular film, Billy Elliot is a powerful new musical about a boy who discovers he has a special talent for dance, while the boys all around him are more interested in boxing. This funny and heart-warming celebration of a young boy's dream features astonishing dancing and singing by a cast of over fifty performers. An unprecedented smash in the West End, where it has won nine Best Musical awards, broken UK box office records and continues to sell out nightly, Billy Elliot has been created by the film's director (Stephen Daldry), writer (Lee Hall) and choreographer (Peter Darling), who are joined by music legend Sir Elton John, one of the most celebrated pop songwriters of the last 30 years.

A enthralling tale of triumph over adversity, Billy Elliot opens at the Imperial Theatre (249 West 45th Street, between Broadway & 8th Avenue) in October, 2008 and is the hottest selling ticket on Broadway. We have thirty-six orchestra seats. When they’re gone, they’re gone!

Please be advised that this show contains both strong language & strong political commentary.

Tickets will only be reserved when payment is received. Tickets are non-refundable.

Transportation to and from the theater will be provided in a deluxe motor coach. The bus will leave the Teaneck Marriott at 5:00 pm sharp and take passengers to the theater district so that they may dine in the city. The bus will leave the Imperial Theater following the show at 11:00 p.m. sharp and return to the hotel.
