Two main objectives of the Guild are "To promote miniatures as an art form, and To increase awareness and appreciation of high-quality workmanship through public education." As the Guild matured, it became evident that many individuals supported these objectives through their passion for fine miniatures as well as their devotion of time, energy and resources. Often, these outstanding individuals were not members of the Guild.

In 1988, IGMA established the Guild Crystal Award in order to give recognition to select individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the miniature field, apart from personal artistic achievement. A candidate may have become known through publication of writings in book form or by articles in widely read publications; by lectures, demonstrations and/or courses pertaining to miniatures given to widespread audiences; by long-standing, very active volunteer participation in activities in support of miniatures, or by a major involvement in the founding and/or maintenance of an organization whose prime purpose is the promotion of miniatures.

Candidates are proposed by Guild members, approved by the Board of Trustees and selected by the Crystal Committee. The Crystal Award recipients are announced at the Guild's Annual Meeting and are presented with a Steuben crystal apple as well as a certificate acknowledging their accomplishment.
