INSTRUCTOR: Mary Grady O’Brien, Fellow
COURSE: Folk Art Oil Painting
PROJECT: Decorated Chair with Seascape

This class will offer students the opportunity to develop and explore their very own design on a Mark Murphy chair while enjoying the flexibility of working with oil paints. For someone more comfortable following an explicit pattern, there will be a number of suggested designs and a prototype available. Lighthouses, ships, sea, and whales, are all possible subjects for individual creations. The instructor encourages a little pre-Castine planning, so students can bring any reference material that appeals to them. It is very satisfying to develop your own creative expression and perhaps easier than you think.
The more disciplined aspect of this project will be
learning how to do the delicate striping that will adorn
the arrow-back spindles, seat, and other parts of the
side chair. There will be class demonstrations and
practice boards to learn how to better control the brush
and execute these important details.
Unless, otherwise requested, each chair will be painted black. However, if students desire to coordinate this chair with another piece of furniture, other colors are available. It will be necessary to declare this preference well in advance.
24 hours. Completion is likely.
