INSTRUCTOR: Iulia Chin Lee, Artisan
COURSE: Furniture Construction
PROJECT: Colonial Table, Circa 1700
(This class is full)

This is a very fine and beautiful walnut table with a scroll apron. Small tables were very popular in the late 17th and early 18th Centuries. They were versatile and could be moved about due to their small size. Some of them were used as chamber tables, as well as for reading or writing. The example for this class has very bold turnings and a deeply scrolled frame.
The techniques involved in this project are spindle turning on a lathe, cutting the scroll with a jeweler’s saw, mortise-tenon jointing, tongue- groove and dowel- socket jointing. The students will learn to turn on a lathe.
The instructor will teach students how to analyze the composition of the original turning design and how to copy the shapes so that they can make identical parts without using duplicators. The students will also learn how to use a jeweler’s saw to cut curve contours. The table will be assembled in a traditional manner. The instructor will guide students step-by-step to acquire the techniques needed. In the class she will discuss the construction of tables and how to make scale mechanical drawings for miniature furniture. Students will also learn about traditional materials and methods for finishing.
The instructor will share with the students her experience in furniture making and wood-turning for the past two decades and pass on invaluable knowledge she has gained through years of studies.
