INSTRUCTOR: Alan Hamer, Fellow
COURSE:
Metalworking
PROJECT: The Ant

hamer

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Spotted in the South of France, how could a miniature blacksmith not make this sign? This class will start by returning to the basics; some class time learning about the properties of the metals, how they like to be worked, and how they can be controlled with heat. The safe use of the micro torch for softening and joining metal will be demonstrated and discussed. This is a most important tool. Then on to the use of hand tools, and how some can be modified for better use with miniatures. The class will review the use of the fret saw, an important part of this project. Forging, forming, and scrollwork will be taught as these skills are used, not only for this project, but also throughout metalworking. The planning, sizing, and layout of the design will be next; then, the fabrication of all the parts. Students will learn an easy way to make the proper size and shape iron chain for this, or any future projects. The Ant can be the default project for this class. If more advanced students have an iron sign in mind for a particular project, the instructor will be glad to help with the design and fabrication. Most important, students will return home with more metalworking knowledge, practiced skills, and confidence.

TIME:

24 hours. Completion is likely.

POWER TOOLS:

none

SKILL LEVEL:

All levels. This class is for the more intermediate and advanced students. However, the instructor hesitates to say “not for beginners”, as a few beginners have done very, very well in past classes. Beginners truly confident in their basic skills should do just fine. Use of the fret saw should be a consideration.

MATERIALS FEE:

$40
