Carol Hardy, Fellow
Furniture Construction
Artist Box, Circa 1815–1820
After the mid-eighteenth century, the use of paint gradually increased in Colonial America. Most traveling artists took their tools with them in sturdy boxes partitioned off to accommodate supplies. The original box is probably of English origin and measured 2" W x 10" H. The hinged cover lifts to form a convenient drawing board. Multiple drawers can accommodate cake paints, brushes, pens, and palettes, including a mixing tray pull-out at the front and at either end.
Students will learn authentic joinery while constructing this box including the construction of dados, rabbets, and lap joints. They will construct multiple drawers, build and hinge two doors, the lid, and frame support. Knobs will be turned and hardware attached. Finishing options will be discussed, including the opportunity to airbrush a fine lacquer finish.
36 hours. Completion is likely.
