INSTRUCTOR:

Rob Tukham, Fellow

COURSE:

Free Hand Turning Man Made Materials

PROJECT:

Art Glass on the Lathe

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The lathe is one of the only power tools where the cutting/abrasive is in the hands of the artisan and not the machine. Class participants will learn to appreciate the lathe and how it can add to their miniature projects. In this class students will learn how to replicate “blown art glass” using man made materials. There are an increasing variety of plastics available today. Some are made for the hobby world and others can be adapted to our miniatures. The materials available vary greatly in appearance and ease of turning. This class will give students an introduction to some of the available materials and allow them to choose their project(s) based on their experience and comfort level.

Students will have the opportunity to turn open (bowls) or closed (vases) shapes. Size, shape and material will be the participants’ choice. The instructor will provide the basics needed to complete the project and coach individuals in the class. Students will learn to finish their project using a variety of abrasives and polishes. The end result will be a finished project that resembles “Art Glass”.

TIME:

24 hours. Completion is likely.

POWER TOOLS:
