Carved Furniture Construction
14th Century Carved Chest
In early times a chest was an invaluable item of furniture which could be used for storing almost anything, for transporting the contents, for sitting upon, or with a big chest, even for sleeping. An old chest can be used in any period and in almost any room.
Students will learn about the construction of a boarded chest. Most chests were constructed of oak, but students will be using steamed pear as the grain is fine. It is lovely to carve and, when stained, it can be made to resemble oak in miniature. Students will cut out the separate pieces using a table saw and make the shape in the end boards to form the feet using a scroll saw. When these pieces are prepared and smoothed ready for assembly, students will then mark out and carve the relief design on the front in easy stages. There will be a limited choice of designs to suit ability. The finished size is 3 ¼" W, 2 1/8" H and 1 ½" D.
For the carving students will use a set of palm held micro carving tools. After completing the carving and staining all the pieces to the shade of oak desired (light or new oak, medium or dark) students will learn how to assemble the chest and then shape it to attach the lid using a pin hinge (an early form of hinge). Finally, students will give the wood a beautiful natural finish in the same way as this would have originally been done.
