George III Writing Table, Circa 1800
This is a small elegant English writing table typical of the period when the quality of available timbers allowed much finer tapered legs without the need for cross stretchers. From a prepared cutting list of materials, students will taper the fine legs and create the spade feet. A false drawer front will be made and banded—the working drawer opening from the side of the table as on the original. The mitred writing slope will be made, hinged, and inset with thin leather. A finish will be applied before fitting the hardware. Skills and techniques learned will include: accurate assembly construction, veneering and banding, spade feet and tapering, and hinging.
