12 Hour Classes

INSTRUCTOR:

Rob Tukham, Fellow

COURSE:

Free Hand Wood Turning and Finishing

PROJECT:

“That Can’t Be Wood”

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

The lathe is one of the only power tools where the cutting/abrasive is in the hands of the artisan and not the machine. Class participants will learn to appreciate the lathe and how it can add to their miniature projects. Students will learn how to use the supplied tools to turn and finish a bowl/vase that is pleasant to the eye. The focus of the class will be on finishing techniques so they will not have time to hollow out the pieces. Instead they will drill the opening in the vase shapes. Size, shape, and material will be the student’s choice. The instructor will provide the basics needed to complete the project and coach individuals in the class. Students will use readily available stains and finishes to produce results that may surprise them. The instructor will also have 24K gold leaf to experiment with.

This course is designed to let the student explore new ways of using wood as a turning medium that may or may not end up looking like natural wood. Participants should expect to leave with a piece that is their own creation and not a duplicate of my examples. Basic turning will be part of the course. The focus however will be on how to choose shape, color, and finish to provide a piece to be proud of.
