Victorian Walnut Chaise Lounge, Circa 1855
The design of this chaise relies completely on the use of curved organic forms. This was a style that was admired all through Europe by 1850. A walnut finish was the most popular finish in Britain and the United States. Students will be given an unfinished chaise made of cherry which they will stain with a walnut stain. After the stain dries, they will put the final finish on it. They will upholster it and learn how to tuft a piece of miniature furniture. When they are finished upholstering it, they will make and apply the trim. Then they will add the castors. If students have a vintage piece of fabric that they have been saving for something, this is a good piece of furniture for it. The fabric that is on the sample is thirty years old. So students may bring their own fabric if they want; the instructor will also have some fabric that they can use.
