All About Wood Turning
The course is an introduction to the techniques of wood turning. In this class the instructor will teach students step by step to learn proper usage of tools and the actual cutting maneuvers at the lathe for all the different forms. Many miniature wooden accessories require lathe work. The purpose of this course is to help students develop a skill that will enable them to make a great variety of objects for their own need. The project includes a variety of shapes. The class will start with basic spindle turning. The students will learn how to make straight cuts, as well as concave and convex cuts. A rolling pin will be made at this time.
After the students are comfortable with the tools and this cutting method, they will then learn hollowing. The students will be taught how to make plates and bowls. Combining the techniques of spindle turning and hollowing, the students will make footed bowls and goblets. The instructor will also teach how to finish turnings on the lathe including a lecture on designing and how to duplicate without using a duplicator.
The beginner will gain an understanding of wood-turning and be able to turn objects to suit their needs. The more advanced students can challenge themselves with more complicated and finer pieces. They may venture to turn a pair of candle sticks without any aid of a duplicator. Through practice, students will be able to develop skills to create not only useful but artistic pieces. The students will be turning mahogany, cherry, maple, and some exotic woods.
