Shaker Sewing Table
This Shaker sewing table, with five drawers and an applied raised edge molding, was drawn from a piece in a private collection and is contained in Shop Drawings of Shaker Furniture and Woodenware, Ejner Handberg. Vol. 3, pp. 44–45. The piece is 30" W x 26" H x 18" D. There were many tables like this produced by Shaker communities and sold to the “World” during the 19th and early 20th Centuries. The turned wooden knobs, generous side overhangs, and taper legs are characteristic of Shaker furniture. Students will construct the taper legs using a special jig on the table saw; will cut out the table parts from quarter sawn cherry lumber; and will make the drawers. The knobs will be turned on the duplicator lathe. Students will learn to use water stain and to apply a lacquer sealer and top coat to give the rubbed luster finish seen on many Shaker pieces. The class emphasis will be on the proper safe use of the table saw and the lathe and on learning fundamental miniature woodworking, woodturning, and wood finishing techniques. No special experience is required.
