Mark Murphy Chair

Side Chair in the Living Room

Mark Murphy, IGMA Artisan

Materials fee:  $35

Like Frank Lloyd Wright, the brothers Charles and Henry Greene designed most of the furnishings for the houses they designed. In my opinion, they far surpassed any of the other Arts & Crafts architects of their time. They were strongly influenced by the early Arts & Crafts movement and the simplicity of Japanese design. Their furniture, at it?s best, is very simple and straightforward, using the beauty of the wood, joinery and their superb sense of proportion to say it all.

In making this beautifully designed chair, the students will go through all the joinery processes and decorative details, including the beautiful ebony butterfly splines and square ebony pegs (used throughout the Greenes? furniture designs). The steambending process used on the top rail and back slats will be demonstrated in class, but because of limited time the instructor will be providing the students with these pieces pre-bent. When the construction of the chair is completed the students will learn the instructor?s finishing techniques and how to upholster the seat frame. I expect that each student will go home with all the construction of the chair completed, with some of the simple finishing processes to complete at home.
