Octagonal Table in the Living Room

Dick Hardy, IGMA Artisan

Materials fee:  $75

“Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” - William Morris

Craftsman furniture is characterized by it?s simple geometric design incorporating visible joinery that becomes part of the beauty, honesty and simplicity of the piece. Students will reproduce an octagonal table that was made of mahogany and ebony and resides in the Gamble house. It has a top of fifteen intricately joined pieces that are splined with ebony at each corner. The legs are tapered and fitted with two cross stretchers. The class will concentrate on duplicating the exact joinery and ebony details such as splines, doweling, mortises and through-tenons. Most woods will be cut to size to allow time to concentrate on the intricate joinery details, which will ensure the beauty of simplicity that this piece exemplifies.
